Sword Art Online Alternative Gun Gale Online Trial Deck

Hereby shortened to "AGGO" for the sake of my sanity.

I have a confession. I LOVE Sword Fine art Online. Certainly, a somewhat controversial point of view in the anime community, but really, I scout what I recollect looks interesting, regardless of the mainstream opinion and if I savour it, I relish in the apprehension of watching a new episode of that anime either weekly or in a long marathon if it'south been out for a while.

Therefore, when I heard that in that location was not only one, only 2 new Sword Fine art Online projects post-obit the release of Sword Art Online The Move: Ordinal Scale, I was definitely hyped. I will definitely be covering SAO3: Project Alicization when it releases in late 2018, as I adored the calorie-free novels of this arc and truly think it will be THE All-time Sword Fine art Online series.

However, let'southward not worry about that for now. Today, I'g going to be giving my impressions on the brand new Sword Art Online spin off: AGGO.

The Story:

Much like the Sword Art Online principal serial, AGGO is based on the lite novels of the aforementioned proper name. Nevertheless, dissimilar the main SAO light novels, these are not written by Reki Kawahara, and instead are written past an writer named Keiichi Sigsawa with Reki simply supervising the project.

Equally I write this, the story has not been translated into English officially, so I came into this completely blind. However, from what I've seen so far of episodes 1 and 2, it seems similar it's going to be pretty enjoyable. I have deliberately avoided spoilers relating to the light novels, despite knowing that in that location is a Wiki page covering everything about it, because I really want to see how the anime adapts the story and then see how that contends against the actual reading matter.

Episode 1: Squad Jam!

In this first episode, we seem to start at ane of the seemingly many competitive tournaments in Gun Gale Online called "Squad Jam". We showtime run into our heroes, including our principal protagonist "LLENN", a sub v′ tall girl dressed entirely in vivid pinkish desert gainsay gear, holding an as bright pinkish FN P90 PDW. Accompanying LLENN is a half-dozen'+ animate being of a homo named Grand, who seems to be the tactician of the pair.

I think the beginning half of the episode did a good job at establishing the character of these two individuals, with LLENN clearly being the more flatulent and get-up-and–go type of girl who but wants to blitz into action and mow down some unexpecting enemies with her P90 while M would be quick to remind her that acting rashly is certain to go them both killed pretty chop-chop. It appears she respects his battle tactics though, as even if she is a bit pouty about it, she follows his lead. Even if his atomic number 82 is having her be the bait in the upshot they get ambushed.

Without writing every niggling bit most what happens, the pair end up as i of the final remaining squads in the Squad Jam tournament, with their final opponents being what seems to be a team of professionally trained soldiers who are using the tournament every bit a way to practise boxing drills and combat effectiveness. in other words: They're absolutely trashing a bunch of amateur gamers who know virtually as much about tactical play as I know virtually the origins of the give-and-take "Spiffing" (Seriously, who came up with that word?).

M and LLENN have an thought to ambush the soldiers in a fashion ane wouldn't expect! Without giving likewise much abroad, LLENN takes reward of her pocket-size size and high agility to avert getting in the scopes of the opposing squad, and after realising that they had pretty much no chance at out-gunning her, the concluding 2 members of the war machine squad resign from the tournament in a wonderfully GIF-able manner that is certain to exist used every bit a mode of dropping out of anime related conversations on Discord for months to come up.

Overall, a pretty decent first episode. Nosotros don't really encounter how M and LLENN met or annihilation like that, only it seems this is going to be covered in episode two. I know this because I've already watched episode 2.

Episode 2: GGO

That'southward correct! Nosotros're jumping straight into this!

With episode ane only actually introducing usa to the globe of GGO and giving usa a little scrap of insight into the character of LLENN and M, episode 2 focuses a lot more on what happens prior to LLENN competing in Squad Jam. That'southward correct, we saw the effect of the tournament earlier fifty-fifty learning about the characters! An interesting motility, just I'm keen to run across what other obstacles are thrown in the path of our protagonist.

Earlier the opening rolls, we're introduced to our chief character: Karen Kohiruimaki, explaining how she had moved to Tokyo from Hokkaido to attend a women's academy.

Nosotros also acquire at this point that Karen istall. Not merely tall for a Japanese woman, which is around five'2″, but tall in general. Standing somewhere effectually half dozen'+. Due to this, we learn that prior to moving to Tokyo, she was teased a lot for her aberrant top, and as a outcome gained somewhat of a complex about it. She desired aught more than to be short and cute (although she'southward pretty cute already).

A friend of hers tells her about the AmuSphere, which is the next generation of Full Dive, Virtual Reality Headgear after the failure of the NerveGear due to the unfortunate side effect of information technology turning the brain of the people who wore it to soup if they aggro'd in their RPG games too hard. Attracted by the idea of living another life in another world, she buys herself an AmuSphere and a copy of ALfheim Online and dives into her first e'er VRMMO.

Upon getting past the graphic symbol generation page, she is horrified to learn that her character was just equally tall equally she was in real life! This realisation causes her heartbeat to rise rapidly, triggering the AmuSphere's safe shut-off, forcing her from the game.

So, ALO wasn't her thing. Unfortunate, but since the release of the Seed Development Kit, in that location were a whole host of games to cull from! And most of these games had a gratis trial period. Smashing! So begins a montage of her converting between game…. after game… after game. Alas, RNJesus was not playing fair. Information technology seemed her luck at getting that S Rank, five star, primo-smolbean avi was out of achieve until after almost twoscore different attempts, she finally gets herself an avatar she loves in Gun Gale Online.

But what skilful is being in a game if you don't know how to play information technology? And what kind of multiplayer game would it exist if there wasn't some kind of tutorial where you're taught the basics of navigation, shooting and other skills that will probably be important if the thing you're aiming for is non getting killed immediately upon stepping exterior a safezone. Luckily, GGO does come with such a tutorial, which is hosted past a busty drill instructor that I have the overwhelming temptation to dub the vocalization Gunnery Sergeant Hartmann from Full Metallic Jacket over (RIP R. Lee Ermey).

"I've got your name! I've got your donkey! Yous will not laugh! You will not weep! Yous will learn past the numbers and I volition teach yous!" – This chick, probably.

Tutorial completed, information technology's time to go shopping, and as it turns out it's really hard to find beautiful dresses in a world full of war, guns and violence in general. However, you tin can dye your clothes a different colour, and so I judge if you lot're going to make yourself look as cutesy every bit possible, y'all should just pick that "Desert Pink" color scheme. Which, equally it turns out does serve some sort of purpose in a battlefield.

I'm going to sidetrack the episode commentary for simply a moment to actually talk about the historic significance of pink camouflage in a desert surround. During the Falklands War, the Special Air Service (SAS) would actually use land rovers that were painted a vivid pinkish colour during desert OPs. The reason for this was that in low low-cal conditions, deserts were actually a lot more pink than they were the typical yellowy color you remember of when y'all call up of sand. In fact, the picture below from the anime is a pretty authentic representation of how pink it could look out there in the desert and why this was so effective.

As a bit of a military nerd, I found that really smashing and LLENN takes full reward of it when a couple of stragglers accidentally trigger her tripwire. Despite beingness outgunned and outnumbered, LLENN uses her superior speed, maneuverability and her camo to neutralise those targets. Peachy stuff.

From there, it'due south mostly just LLENN turning people to swiss cheese in the desert and making a name for herself until she meets another female gamer whose avatar proper noun is Pitohui. They become fast friends and before you lot know it they're doing the typical girl thing of going shopping for guns and discussing the all-time way to murder people. (This is normal daughter stuff, right?)

Anyway, these 2 characters are pretty neato. I look forward to seeing them in activeness in episode iii!

Overall, so far this is looking to be a really neat series and I think I'1000 going to enjoy it. The characters seem skilful and there seems to be a nice mix of cute and action-packed moments.

I'll probably post more thoughts on it as the episodes progress. Signing off (for now)!
